That's what I've learnt today in Church. Let me explain...
In the times of the Old Testament, people, when out of their earthly forms, were suppose to be given a fair and strict punishment for all the sins they've commited. So it was like, 'Raped someone = 4 Hell Lashes', 'Murdered Best Friend = 6 Nails to be Hammered into the Right Hand', ect. (These aren't the real punishments; just to give a rough guide...)
Now to understand what happened on the cross let's use the all-time famouse verse of John 3:16 and 17. Following the New International Version, it says " For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever that believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
So let's look at what happened again. Satan was having a good time tempting people to look away from God and sin, so that when the time of Judgement comes, he gets to torture them creations of God. God, watching this before his eyes, was deeply heart-broken and wanted to put a stop to this.
But he couldn't just swoop into Earth and beat the devil out of Satan. Why? 'Cause Adam and Eve decided to turn away from God and stopped trusting in him for that short momment of eating into the Forbiddeen Fruit just to want to be 'gods', thus commiting the first sin and making us unworthy to the sight of God (but of corse, although God couldn't stand the sinfulness, he still loved, is loving and will forever us very much.). This particular event gave Satan control over the world, and God didn't take it back from him as He was a God of Justice, and when man gave Satan the world, man gave satan the world. So everytime men sinned, they had to give offerings to God through the High Priest, who was suppose to be the non-sinful man most closest to God.
So back to God's sorrow, God wanted a way to take awy all the punishments of the world so that he could be with His children again. So what does he do? He sends his only Son, Jesus Christ, on earth. God told Abraham and many people after him about his plan, and Satan obviously heard it time after time, panicking because he doesn't know when this Messiah would come and defeat him. So when the time came, Jesus went through every replica of every temptation and bad situation anyone in the world had gone, is going and will go through. Approved to God that he was pure and knew how to handle every problem possibe by faith, God had to allow what he had to allow.
He had to make his Son a sacrifice to Himself.
It was dreadful for both the Father and the Son, but they both knew it had to be done. Through this way, Jesus was made the perfect sacrifice to God. But after being killed, Jesus had to go through one more thing. He had to be condemned to hell and suffer every punishment each man had to go through.
But if He was so good on earth, why did he end up going to hell? Well, it's because it was written in one of Moses' Laws that 'Cursed is a man who gets hung on a tree'. So when Jesus was cursed, he went to hell and was tortured by all the devils. And boy, did all of those brats torture Him to their heart's content. But when All the punishment was paid for already, God could already say, "Stop!".
The information in the above paragraph if found all over the Bible, and not directly in one verse.
When he found out what he's done, which was to spend all the torture he could possibly give to the Son of God so that he could no longer do it to anyone else, he knew he had no more control over anyone on earth anymore. And that's what makes him defeated! Every sin has been 'paid' for at Christ's expense, and that's what Grace means; God's Rightioussness At Christ's Expense.
So if you ever condemned that God hates you 'cause you've sinned so much, think again. He even allowed His Son's death to happen just so that you'd be forgiven and not have to go through the pains of Satan! Even Satan can't do anything to you but just tempt you into doing stuff which shows you have no trust that God can help you in life. And God's always there to lend a helping hand in ways which you may not understand instantly or in the way you wanted it to help, but by God's way and timing.
So will you believe?
